Boys Regional Rankings, 11/19

By Paul Schmitz for DyeStat

Our rankings job got much easier in three regions where NXN regionals took place last weekend.

Summit OR was the first boys team to punch its NXN ticket with a win at the Northwest Regional.  Eight points back was Bozeman MT with 128. North Central WA, automatic qualifiers in the last eight Nike National meets might be on the outside looking in with its third place finish.

In the Heartland, Minnesota dominated the boys event as expected.  Hopkins turned in an incredible performance and look for it to move up in our next national rankings.  Minnesota could possibly qualify three teams to NXN as Edina (ninth place 2014 NXN finisher) narrowly beat Wayzata (second place 2014 NXN finisher) by four points for the second auto spot.  Wayzata now has the long wait for at-large on selection day and there is no doubt that the committee will be taking a hard look.

In the Midwest, Illinois was equally as dominant. Sandburg and Neuqua Valley earn the automatic bids and Lyons Township has a strong case for an at-large bid finishing only 10 points from second and 30 points from our US#1 team.  Lafayette couldn’t overcome its 1:23 split on five in such a strong field.

It was an interesting week in the Northeast, where previously unranked Don Bosco Prep defeated Christian Brothers Academy in the non-public school race at the New Jersey Group Championships -- CBA's first in-state loss since 2009.  On the public school side,  Old Bridge (our regional No. 4 in the last rankings) beat Cherry Hill East 54-81.  It gets really interesting when the average times of the top five runners in these races are compared.  Old Bridge and Don Bosco both averaged 16:30 while CBA and Cherry Hill East both averaged 16:32.  However, don't count CBA out of an NXN Northeast spot just yet. CBA put its sixth and seventh ahead of Bosco's fifth and that depth could come into play in a larger field.

Burroughs competed without sophomore standout Alexander Hirsch and still qualified second behind Dana Hills in its Division I heat. Despite a serious challenge from Davis Senior, Jesuit captured its first Sac-Joaquin Section title since 2006 with a 38-48 victory.
