Destiny Collins and Marissa Williams just destroyed a Kim Mortensen course record at the Seaside Invitational this afternoon, running separately in the junior and senior races. The previous record was 16:35. Collins ran 15:58.3 and Williams 15:59.8.

While I'm not sure what the team time record was (betting it was held by Saugus, probably 87:33), Great Oak destroyed that as well, running 84:53.2 (or 84:55 if all times are rounded up).

The 3-mile course is apparently faster than it once was (smoothing of sharp turns) but it's not that much faster.

Wow! That is incredibly quick. Collins and WIliams wasted no time posting great national class cross country results. Even with Efraimson, Cranny, Baxter and Knights gone, this is still going to be a great year for girls XC.

On Ortega vs Williams ...

My end-of-season rankings last December had Marissa Williams 25th, Ortega 27th.

Both of them theoretically could have moved up some from that. What bothered me slightly about Ortega is that she didn't race after May 8. I presume there was an injury there, so that made me a little cautious with her. But she is also the presumed No. 1 for Saugus, which is a great program, so I give her the benefit of the doubt for getting ready for the upcoming season.

Williams slipped a few spots -- but again, these things are so close that a difference of 5 spots is pretty miniscule from 27 to 32. However, the reason why she slipped a bit was her California state meet and 14th in the 3200 finals. Collins, Beneduce, Pietrzyk and McCandless all beat her there pretty handily. Williams was 8th in this race in 2013 and 10 seconds faster. She could have an awesome fall, and I hope she does, but her most recent "big" race left something to be desired.

I agree. For what its worth she was quoted the week before the state meet, when interviewed by Rich Gonzales, where she said she was upset that her coach was making her run 4 weeks of 1600/800/3200 triples just prior to the two day state meet event and wanted to just focus on the 1600. I suspect the 3200 was a combination of perhaps being overworked, peaking too soon, and a lack of motivation/desire. Collins beat her handily, but the others did not run 1600, so that isn't a fair comparison. Those nearly every girl who wasn't in the 1600 PRed while those that were in the 1600 did not. I don't think that is a coincidence. That said, she was in the 1600 last year as well when she ran 10 seconds faster. I'd argue that her 10:30 3200 two hours after running the 1600m finals last year was probably better than her 10:25 at Arcadia this year. Last year however, she wasn't forced to triple at LACS and league prelims and finals.

Matthew,

I believe the difference that separates Marissa and Samantha is their performances at the national meets - NXN and and FLN. Since these are national rankings, Doug has to be looking at these two national meets as his first comparison. Samantha Ortega ran 17:53 at FLN for 15th place, while Marissa Williams ran 18:01 at NXN for 24th. Both strong performances, but in my opinion Samantha's performance was stronger on a relative basis as the Foot Locker field is generally more elite. I haven't taken the time to compare quantitatively, but that's what is likely behind the difference.

You are right that in past years the FLN field has been much stronger, but 2013 was an anomaly. The NXN field was unusually strong for individuals that year. It was an unusually poor race for all the top CA girls except for O'Keefe and Baxter.
flicflac
Perhaps Anna Flynn should be higher than 98. FL NE team won in San Diego last year with 26 points. West was 2nd with 49. Bottom line is that FL NE was the most talented and difficult to make the top 10. Perhaps the northeast is generally underrepresented on your list.

Right, Foot Locker Northeast is definitely a meet that mattered in these rankings.

Anna Flynn was 26 seconds up on Warner at the finish --- and she's 98th!

Is Warner deserving? Maybe ... and we'll surely find out. But it takes some seriously good credentials to make this top 100 list. The overall quality of girls distance running in the US has sky-rocketed in the last 10 years.

The girl who comes in at 100th ... ran 10:49 for 3200 at altitude and was 13th in the NXN Southwest meet. Lots of quality in that race, too.

Great job! It is really difficult once you get past the first few. Marissa WIlliams, however, is ranked way too low. Here are the merged results from the CA state meet

1 Sarah Baxter SR 2 Simi Valley 16:42.7 5:23 1848 SS
2 Fiona O'Keeffe SO 1 Davis Sr. 16:58.8 5:28 1239 SJS
3 Marissa Williams JR 1 Palisades Charter 17:04.0 5:30 481 LAS - 18:01.3 NXN (in an off race for her, still finished ahead of Collins, Clark, Aragon, and Hasz), 10:25.02 at arcadia
4 Bethan Knights SR 3 Northwood 17:07.3 5:31 1718 SS
5 Anna Maxwell SR 4 S.L.V. 17:07.8 5:31 185 CCS
6 Destiny Collins SO 1 Great Oak 17:09.0 5:32 1589 SS -18:13.1 NXN, 10:14.33 at SS masters
7 Sarah Robinson SR 1 Gunn 17:15.5 5:34 62 CCS
8 Addi Zerrenner SR 2 Dos Pueblos 17:17.4 5:34 1526 SS
9 Leigh Moffett SR 1 Clovis North 17:24.1 5:37 273 CS
10 Lauren Larocco SR 1 St. Francis (sac) 17:26.0 5:37 1390 SJS
11 Samantha Ortega JR 2 Saugus 17:26.3 5:37 1826 SS - 10:26.39 at arcadia
...
14 Amber Gore JR 2 Redondo Union 17:35.4 5:40 1763 SS
27 Caroline Pietrzyk JR 4 Malibu 17:51.5 5:45 1685 SS
54 Kimberly Coscia JR 2 South Torrance 18:16.8 5:54 1857 SS
168 Emily Beneduce FR 3 Oak Park 18:55.6 6:06 1719 SS

Now I think Collins should be ranked ahead of Williams, but I can't think of any reason why Ortega should be. Now is Ortega ranked too high or is Williams ranked to low? In head to head competition Williams has beat Ortega nearly every time on the track in 14 and in cross country in 13. I'm curious to hear about the rational behind this portion of the rankings.
flicflac
Smythington found some good races for you to consider for Warner. Also I mentioned her best Holmdel Park time in comparison to Dwyer. You should consider OCP, where the Shore Conference Champs are held, more in line with the type of course the rest of the XC runners in the US generally race on.
DougB
Marin Warner is a good name to come up with. There is a good case for her making the list, absolutely. 4:49.88 for 1600 is something I could have taken a long look at. I wish she'd run something a little more indicative of her talent in the 3200 this spring.

However, I think you would find that almost everyone in the Shore Conference Champs PR'd by 30-45 seconds, if not more, which means it could have been short. There were four guys under 15 minutes in that race who never ran in the 14s again. So I think basing a ranking for her solely out of that particular race would be a stretch. But she did win it. I'll surely be interested to see what she does in match-ups with Dwyer and Lansing this fall.
ProFromDover
Just picked up on a something:#5 Brianna Schwartz is a senior.

Warner in NJ/East: eighth at the Meet of Champions (18:36), and 19th at the Foot Locker Northeast (18:53). These were both difficult courses at 5k.
flicflac
Just checked - Marin Warner also has the 25th fastest returner time in the nation at 5 K.
DougB
A spot opened up. She's on the list.
flicflac
I believe Marin Warner (NJ) should be on this list. She has the 2nd best NJ returner 5K time and is 1/100th of a second behind Gracie Dwyer (your 49) at Holmdel.
ProFromDover
The Ma Div.2 duo Olivia Lantz (Manchester), Catalina Dominic (Davers) --Sr's-- are good and should crack the top-100 at some point. I would have ranked Ma Div.1 champ Kaley Richards (Lowell/Jr) though I don't know how good she is yet?
I'd give it a few weeks and see who goes sub-18 before I'd say the group are underrated (for sure). I have a feeling Dominic could have a breakout year but we'll know in a mid-Sept.

Shehadeh doesn't race Ma HS's as she's a (NY'er) preppy but she may line up as in ind. in a Div.2 college race or two as she did last year.

Gess --still playing Bb?-- may or may not be improved and it's just a question of being good or very good. McMillan at #74 is a winter swimmer, a physically impressive prospect who will tower over most girls she lines up against and if she matures with a quicker leg turnover the Jr. could really be tough. Danae Rivers (New Haven)one of only a few AfAm urban middle dis types who can handle CC and I'm sure this Jr. is on a lot of recruiters watch list. Annie Heffernan name jumps out a bit at #64 because she made the Nike elite last summer. I don't think she was there this month.

I don't doubt more than a few will be able to handle a very tough 17:00? pace but right now
Hannah DeBalsi makes sense for #1.
Very nice job Doug.
DougB
Those are all great questions, Bsarno.

I tried to get more intel on Shehadeh, but ultimately had to base her ranking off where she finished last year. Mystery indeed.

I know Anna has some injury problems to manage, but if she puts herself in position late in the year like she did at the end of track season, I think No. 2 is justified.
bsarno
Already did! Where did it go?
bsarno
Another excellent job...
Some mystery runners...has Shehadeh improved...if so, watch out.
Rohrer injured again....sad...hope she recovers fully and quickly.
Has Gess improved?
Will anyone dominate in California...maybe a surprise newcomer?
Is this year Montana's year to shine.
My favorite is Ostander...how many sports this fall?
