Well , when I am wrong I admit it.

CBA was easily handled by Lasalle today and at every matchup.

4 in before CBA 2

5 before 3

The results for the last major division for California Boys are in:

Division 1 Boys team results:
101 Great Oak (78:48 / 0:48) -- US#21
107 Dana Hills (78:39 / 1:03) -- US#20
109 Madera South (78:35 / 1:02) -- US#15
109 Burroughs-Burbank (78:52 / 0:11) -- US#12
174 Warren (80:06 / 0:41)

... as a reminder, California's qualifiers are determined by power merge.
Just a very rough guess at the teams that are going to come out on top:

1. Ventura - D2 Champion
2. Jurupa Hills - D2 Runner-up
3. Brea Olinda - D3 Champion
4. could be Agoura or Great Oak or Saugus ... all three were close in team time and spread.

A quick cross-region comparison with the SE (the courses usually run very similar):

Southeast #3 Lake Braddock VA -

5 Alex Corbett 15 Lake Braddoc 15:00.5 4
15 Kevin Monogue 15 Lake Braddoc 15:25.1 11
21 Colin Schaefer 16 Lake Braddoc 15:34.3 16
29 Ben Fogg 16 Lake Braddoc 15:42.7 22
128 Evan Chase 17 Lake Braddoc 16:26.3 106

CA D2 #2 Jurupa Hills -

1 2 Michael Teran SR 1663 15:08
2 7 Devon Reed SR 1662 15:20
3 14 Luis Ortega SR 1659 15:36
4 31 Brittan Reed SR 1661 15:56
5 51 Jonathan Ray SR 1660 16:10

CA D3 #1 Brea Olinda -

1 1 Austin Tamagno JR 1492 15:09
2 6 Austin Shellito SR 1490 15:29
3 10 Gio Orellana SO 1489 15:36
4 17 Angel Escobar SR 1487 15:46
5 41 Chris Dedio SR 1486 16:13

CA D1 #1 Great Oak -

1 4 Nick Doan SR 1629 15:25
2 9 Isaac Cortes JR 1628 15:36
3 10 Spencer Dodds JR 1627 15:37
4 34 Anthony Arvizu SR 1626 15:57
5 44 Nelson Quintana JR 1631 16:13

CA D2#3 Saugus -

1 1 Brian Zabilski SR 1820 15:07
2 22 Ryan Tate JR 1819 15:49
3 33 Tim Broggie SR 1814 15:59
4 35 Jordan Serrano SR 1818 15:59
5 39 Austin Fischer JR 1815 16:01

CA D3 #2 Agoura -

1 4 Michael Powell SR 1444 15:27
2 11 Cole Hoff JR 1441 15:37
3 21 Ross Husch SR 1442 15:53
4 24 Logan Grove JR 1440 15:55
5 28 Chandler Ross SR 1439 16:01

EDIT: Just did my own power merge of the CA results... I used 22 teams using a step-down approach, but the official power merge will probably be more like 16 teams just taken straight from the mass merge (just a guess, don't know how many teams they will be including).

The results of that 22 team power merge:

1. Ventura (Division 2 Champion) 130
2. Brea Olinda (Division 3 Champion) 178
3. Jurupa Hills (Division 2 Runner-up) 190
4. Burroughs-Burbank (Division 1 fourth place) 214
5. Great Oak (Division 1 Champion) 223
6. Madera South (Division 1 third place) 223
7. Dana Hills (Division 1 fourth place) 224
8. Agoura (Division 3 Runner-up) 232
9. Saugus (Division 2 third place) 263
10. Palos Verdes (Division 3 third place) 268
11. Canyon-Anaheim (Division 2 fourth place) 272
12. Claremont (Division 2 fifth place) 291
13. West Torrance (Division 2 sixth place) 304
14. Westview (Divisino 2 seventh place) 312
15. Rubidoux (Division 3 fourth place) 317

... I'm pretty sure those top three teams won't change. Different # of teams included will give a different #4 team, though I don't think that will matter (this year), and it would probably always Great Oak placed #4 anyways (I don't think Agoura passes the Division 1 quartet once you use less than 50 teams).

SE AQ teams announced: Severna Park MD and Daniel Boone TN qualified for nationals! It'll be interesting to see how close the #3/4 teams were, this was a very deep year for the SE.

EDIT: Only 19 points separated 1st from 4th! Close race... apparently the other two teams were Lake Braddock and Brentwood. They must have moved up very well over the final 3k.

Watchout , actually think you make a grea attempt at getting this right.

For CBA Ferro who was once a 15:30's type at Holmdel, he was off at MOC for whatever reason.

The whole season is way to long for my liking with way too much focus on XC which used to be a prep to everything else. Just my view.

Yet CBA who beat Lasalle heads up even if they had a lead dog would have been very close is at 6, CBA at 22.

My own view, CBA and Lasalle? A bit over ranked as it turns out, altho I would love to see someone try and beat CBA at Holmdel if Ferro was in 15:30 form which I think he was at one point.

The whole thing goes on way too long for me anymore. I have actually lost a ton of interest.

Watchout,
OK. Thanks. Understand regarding Durney. Still makes no sense - to me at least but I am pretty dim - why someone not running States does not count but someone not running NXN Regionals does. Anyway, that's why they run the race in Portland. Thanks again for answering and thank you for doing the rankings. I look forward to them. Will you do another round after all the Regionals?
Cheers,
CB

Durney will count (again) once he runs at NXR - as will Denger (or whoever isn't running varsity at NXR).

I haven't talked about it, but I'm sure I'll do either an NXN Projection or Preview of some sort next week and then a full national rankings after NXN. I think that's what we did last year, at least.

Any explanation on Timpanogos's high ranking? Davis and AF ran well and were very close (though I do think AF could have run a little better in their 4 and 5), while Timp was nearly 75 points behind. Do you think the southwest was really that competitive?

Actually, I thought that was a pretty solid run for AF - their #4 could have been a bit further up, but aside from that their scorers ranged from average days to PRs. It was an incredible race for Davis. Both are looking like US Top 3 teams to me, obviously.

Yes, I think the SW is that competitive at the top. It is has always been one of the strongest regions (edging the NW for the best average score for the AQ teams over the course of the Regional era with only the Midwest and Northeast remotely close), and this year is much deeper than other years (as was expected - AF set yet another Utah State Meet record, Davis ran the fastest non-AF time outside of their 2011 team despite what I would call an "off" day, Desert Hills ran the fastest non-AF time outside of those two Davis teams and Herriman '12, and Timpanogos ran the fastest non-AF time outside of three Davis teams and that Herriman squad).

Besides, 2 minutes (team time) behind a US#1 hasn't usually that far off a Top 5 finish at NXN lately. It was a ~2 minute gap in 2011 (79:59 and 79:58 for the Top 2 vs. 81:53/81:41/81:57/81:58/81:57 for the #5-9 teams), and the same in 2013 (77:53 for GH vs. 79:54/80:06/79:46/79:50 for #4-7). 2008 and 2009 were closer races timewise, and 2010/2012 were muddy and time gaps were naturally even greater.

Durney of CBA ran States and sat MOC. Maton of Summit ran States and sat NXN Regional. You include Maton. You don't include Durney. Am I missing something? Love the rankings. Think they are great and add excitement and discussion to the sport. Just wondering since you offered the two as examples.

Given the criteria you've outlined, not quite sure how Great Oak drops 15 places because Spencer Dodds was sick and unable to run at SS Finals.

Have to agree that your Maton and Durney examples are contradictory (since both Maton and Durney ran in their state meets).

Derney ran NJ Groups. Groups is the All-State Qualifying meet for the NJ Meet of Champions, which is the New Jersey State Finale.

It would be pretty unfair if I considered two different meets as "State Meets" for any state. That's why it's always been my policy to use the last "state meet" any team competes in (meaning, for example, NY Federations if the NY team runs at Feds, or NJ MOC if NJ teams run MOC - which they all do if they qualify). Or, for a CA comparison (which is a much more apples to apples comparison IMO as NY Feds isn't exactly a mandatory race), I don't include what athletes run at CIF-SS Prelims as being the same as what they run at CIF-SS Finals.

EDIT: As for Great Oak, they've been SLOWLY dropping pretty much ever since three weeks after NPN (they ran well enough at Clovis and Mt. SAC to delay the drop, but even Mt. SAC was more than a month ago now). NPN was their best race of the year, and while most of their guys have run that well at some point since, not all have. Their dropping in the rankings isn't simply due to Dodds not racing at CIF-SS Finals (although IF he had finished alongside Doan, they would still be #5 or 6). Especially coming from someone who has talked about the importance of team standings at meets in the past, I don't see what the confusion is on how GO drops given the criteria discussed though... obviously, if any team misses a frontrunner like Dodds, it's going to hurt them quite a bit in the rankings. It's not like there aren't a whole host of teams close enough to take advantage of that (as you saw at CIF-SS Finals).

Necessary primer to understand the rankings:

1. Sometimes the order at the NXN Regional meet is not the order in the rankings. This is because I include any athlete that ran Varsity for the team in the state meet, NXN Regional meet, and NXN National meet. Case in point is Summit OR, who is ranked ahead of the NW Champion North Central because I include their #1 (Matthew Maton) in the rankings, who didn't run NXN NW after winning the Oregon State meet (because he is running Foot Locker West instead). This is a policy I have had since the very first year I did rankings for DyeStat (2007).

2. Rankings are NOT based solely on what happened at the latest race for the team. This is the post season, I am looking at who runs well most importantly at their latest meet, but also giving credit to running well (or not) at previous championship meets (at this point, the State meet). In other words, consistency matters. That is why York IL is "only" US#39 this week - their regional race was better than that (it was by far their best race of the year, probably worth something around a US#25 ranking), but their ranking is tempered by what they ran at IL State (a much more "average" race for them).

3. If a runner does NOT run varsity at the state meet or beyond, they are not really factored into the ranking. Case in point is CBA, who held out Aiden Derney at the New Jersey MOC. Had he run (and ran his usual race), they would have been ahead of Kamiakin at US#19.

Hopefully that answers the biggest questions some of you guys might have. Any more questions, as always, feel free to ask on here and I'll do my best to answer.
