Timpanogos UT rises to 5 with Firman win

We have one more ranking where where we will be giving some teams the benefit of the doubt based upon potential. For example, our top team, CBA, has run without a full line-up including the absence of Blaise Ferro, who is expected back soon.  However, after this ranking, our next national list will weigh much more heavily on 2015.

Timpanogos of Utah is our big mover this week, up from #31 with their win in the Bob Firman Invitational over a stellar field that included Great Oak, Davis, Lehi and North Central.  Their two-point win over Great Oak puts those teams neck and neck at US#5 and US#6.

Another riser in the poll is St. Ignatius, who was our preseason team to beat in Ohio and a team to watch in the national poll.  They enter at US#13 after their impressive win at the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational in Kentucky over preseason #10 Carmel IN and preseason Southeast #5 Brentwood TN.  Fayetteville-Manlius, the reining NXN champ, continues their ascent, rising to US#22, but remains well behind our preseason darkhorse East Aurora NY, who have edged up to US#9.

Dowling Catholic IA broke up the Minnesota party in the Heartland with a win at the fabled Roy Griak Invite at the University of Minnesota.  The team from Iowa beat preseason nationally ranked US#11 Edina, US#23 Wayzata and US#49 Millard West NE.  DC debuts in our national ranking at US#15 and look for them to have a prominent place in our Heartland regional ranking next week.

Other debuts to our poll include Martin Luther King CA, Serena Park MD and Trinity Prep FL, who all had impressive weeks with high finishes over nationally ranked teams.

A lot of it can be attributed to higher levels of local competition bringing out the best in everyone else, but someone has to elevate the level in the first place. It seems like these things usually build gradually over several years, then taper off before starting a new cycle. Utah is at (or ahead of?) where Washington was the past few years.

Utah at #3-5-11-16, wow, top end and depth.

You bring up an interesting observation, dkap. 4 teams each from Utah and California, 3 from Minnesota, and two each from Maryland, Illinois, Texas and New York. What factors contribute to a certain state or area having strong XC programs? Maybe just a numbers game could explain California, Texas and New York, but what about the others?
