Loudoun Valley carries No. 1 ranking to NXR SE

By Paul Schmitz of DyeStat

Loudoun Valley VA went wire to wire at No. 1 and completed the regular season with a Virginia Class 4A championship. If the Vikings run to form Saturday in North Carolina, they could be the favorites at Nike Cross Nationals.

Great Oak CA is the only other team in the country in the same tier as Loudoun Valley. The Wolfpack continues to dominate the competition in California and recently won the California CIF Southern Section Division 1 title.

Early in the season, the team from Wayzata MN joined Loudoun Valley and Great Oak in that top tier, but have slipped into the second group with the injury to one of its top runners. Grant Price was able to run at NXR Heartland, but he was the seventh man.

Mountain Vista CO joins teams 4-11 that can contend for a podium spot. MV ran impressively for a Colorado state title and took another big step forward at NXR Southwest.

Besides Great Oak, there is an uncertain pecking order in the state of California. Loyola’s solid pack running moved it up the rankings all year and Roosevelt’s lack of team depth and injuries slid it backwards. Roosevelt returned to form and defeated Loyola and Dana Hills in California sectional competition and have moved back into the top 10. Add to the mix the emergence of Division 2 California teams St. Francis Mountain View and Dublin and the California state meet is going to be interesting.

Only one team from New York, Burnt Hills-Ballston, opened the regular season ranked among the top tier. During the course of the year, two teams have joined them in the top 20 -- Fayetteville-Manlius and Corning. This weekend more will be revealed at the NXR New York regional. In the Northeast, there are several teams to keep an eye on besides perennial favorites Christian Brothers Academy NJ. Kingsway NJ, Saint John’s (Tewksbury) MA, Lowell MA, Staples CT, Bishop Hendricken RI and Concord NH all have a shot.
