The Preseason Girls Top 100

1. Katelyn Tuohy, junior, North Rockland NY: She is already one of the all-time great prep female distance runners and still has two more years to go. The NXN champion and course record holder is the first high school girl in modern times to simultaneously hold the national record in both the mile (4:33.87) and the 3,200 meters (9:47.88) outdoors.

2. Katelynne Hart, junior, Glenbard West IL: The all-time Illinois record holder in everything from the 1,500 to 2 miles has enjoyed a terrific summer of training that included a camp at altitude in Colorado. She was the Foot Locker runner-up and placed fourth at NXN last year and seems to keep getting better.

3. Claudia Lane, senior, Malibu CA: She is a two-time defending Foot Locker national champion, so why is she third? Lane’s spring was hampered by injury and she likely to ramp up a bit more conservatively this year as she regains her fitness. She certainly could three-peat in San Diego.

4. Kelsey Chmiel, senior, Saratoga Springs NY: The NXN runner-up and Great Edinburgh XC champion has been sensational since she started at Saratoga Springs and there’s no reason to believe she isn’t headed toward another season full of dominant performances.

5. Ericka VanderLende, senior, Rockford MI: Her massive improvement over the past year included 4:45.17 in the 1,600 meters and 9:59.92 in the 2-mile.

6. Emily Covert, senior, Washburn MN: The Minnesota Class AA champion continued to get better in the spring and ran an all-time state best 10:05.19 in the 2-mile at New Balance Nationals Outdoor. She was ninth at Foot Locker.

7. Claire Walters, junior, Fayetteville-Manlius NY: Her team might not be the preseason favorite to win NXN, but Walters has been a reliable Stotan for three years and if F-M makes another late-season charge, she will lead the way.

8. London Culbreath, junior, McKinney TX: The reigning NXR South and Texas UIL Class 5A state champion broke the all-time state record in the 2-mile with 10:03.29.

9. Marlee Starliper, junior, Northern PA: She enjoyed a breakout season a year ago and won the Foot Locker Northeast regional. She has run 10:17.41 for 3,200 meters.

10. Brooke Rauber, sophomore, Tully NY: She is yet another huge rising talent in New York and she was sixth at NXN as a freshman.

11. Sydney Thorvaldson, sophomore, Rawlins WY: The talented freshman placed ninth at NXN and won multiple Class 3A titles in Wyoming.

12. Tierney Wolfgram, sophomore, Math & Science MN: It’s shaping up to be another big year for girls in Minnesota. Wolfgram was seventh at Foot Locker last year and also won the NXR Heartland title.

31. Lexy Halladay, junior, Mountain View ID: She’s looking to reclaim the magic of her freshman year and lead her team to an NXN berth. She was second at NXR Northwest.
