Wayzata Puts No. 1 Ranking To The Test At Griak By Adam Kopet of DyeStat Wayzata MN holds the top spot in the first in-season national rankings. The Trojans returned a strong core of runners from a year ago and added eighth-grader Abbey Nechanicky, who has been running consistently as a strong No. 3 in the lineup. However, Wayzata will face its first major test this weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational. Third-ranked Naperville (North) IL will be competing, as will No. 8 Yorkville IL and No. 14 Downers Grove (South) IL, in what will be a showdown of the top teams from the Heartland and Midwest Regions. Mountain Vista CO remains at No. 2 from the preseason rankings. Great Oak CA and Summit OR move up to round out the top five. Boise ID is one of the big movers this week after winning the Bob Firman Invitational over a Great Oak squad that left a couple runners with scoring potential back home in California. Desert Hills UT and Beavercreek OH also made big jumps this week. Desert Hills was ranked 47th in the preseason, but finished second at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic; Beavercreek did not make the Top 50 previously, but narrowly beat Centerville OH at the Saturday Night Lights. At this point in the season, the Midwest and Southwest regions show the most depth nationally, each placing six teams in the Top 30. California, New York and the Northwest region follow with four teams each. Girls Top 30 More news |
