The Great American Cross Country Festival not only showcased a great matchup Oct. 2 involving the top two teams in the Southeast at WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C., but also highlighted more depth in the region with rising programs from Maryland and West Virginia.

Cambridge Christian of Florida was leading Weddington High from North Carolina through four scorers in the Race of Champions, but a tighter pack prevailed, allowing the Warriors to triumph in their home state.

Alyx Beausoleil supported Elizabeth Ritter, Emma Jones, Grace Hanson and Audrey Wright by placing 59th overall for Weddington.

Cambridge Christian again relied on Caroline Lehman, Eliana Black and Mary Ellen Eudaly all finishing in the top 20, with Madeleine Gear placing 35th overall. But the Lancers were edged by a three-point margin without a fifth scorer running under 20 minutes.

Howard High of Maryland and Morgantown of West Virginia were also competitive, finishing third and fourth overall to both elevate into the regional top five, with Cuthbertson of North Carolina also in search of a reliable fifth scorer in order to challenge Weddington during the 4A postseason schedule.

Saratoga Springs produced its strongest showing of the season in New York at the Guilderland Invitational at Tawasentha Park, with the Blue Streaks sweeping the top seven spots in the large school race, with the course layout measuring 4,602 meters.

Sophomore Emily Bush produced her best performance of the year by clocking 16:34.77, with all seven Saratoga Springs athletes separated by 65 seconds.

Corning-Painted Post also earned a significant victory at the McQuaid Invitational, with sophomore Sarah Lawson and senior Faithe Ketchum leading the Hawks past Shenendehowa Central by a 76-94 margin.

Haddonfield Memorial High in New Jersey placed six athletes in the top 10 of the varsity D competition at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park, and had the best overall team performance in the merge of all six varsity races.

Helene Usher and Anne Earp led Haddonfield Memorial, both eclipsing the 20-minute barrier, with Angelina Perez leading an improved Lakeland Regional team that continues to ascend, as the senior ran the fastest time of the meet by clocking 17:37 on the 5-kilometer layout.

Texas teams shined in a pair of states, as Lewisville Flower Mound remained home and dominated the Nike South Invitational by placing Nicole Humphries, Samantha Humphries, Alexandra Fox and Virginia Knight in the top 10 of the 2.88-mile elite race.

Southlake Carroll traveled to Arkansas for the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival and earned its second title in three seasons after not being able to compete at last year’s event, with Kaylie Cox and Sylvia Schwedler both placing in the top 25 for the Lady Dragons.

Columbus North, led by junior champion Lily Baker, moved in front of Indiana rival Carmel following a 56-60 victory in the Midwest Race of Champions at the Nike XC Town Twilight Invitational, presented by The Garrett Companies, at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.

Oak Ridge made its first appearance in the California regional rankings following an impressive effort led by Kayla Rutz, Quinn Walker and Ava Maier at the Del Oro Invitational at William Jessup University.

The Trojans will have an opportunity to evaluate their postseason prospects by racing against Newbury Park, Buchanan, JSerra and Anaheim Canyon in the Bill Buettner girls championship race Saturday at the ASICS Clovis Invitational.
