Girls Regional Rankings - 10/21/2021

By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor

Although none of the regional leaders have changed in the past week, and only California has seen another exchange among its elite programs this month following Buchanan defeating Newbury Park in the championship race Oct. 9 at the 42nd ASICS Clovis Invitational, there have been several close calls for top-ranked teams recently in league, conference and county meets across the country.

Cherry Creek edged Arapahoe by a 28-29 margin Oct. 14 at the Centennial League Championships in their sixth showdown this season in Colorado, with the 5A rivals also scheduled to race Thursday in regional competition, as well as Oct. 30 at the state championship meet at Norris Penrose Events Center.

The Bruins rested Stanford commit Riley Stewart and freshman Paisley Piepgras, with Arapahoe showcasing its full lineup, led by league champion Emily Lamontagne.

With Stewart and Piepgras in the Cherry Creek lineup Oct. 8 at the Pat Amato Classic, the Bruins secured a 39-59 victory over Arapahoe.

The Lake Conference Championship meet Oct. 14 in Minnesota produced another thrilling matchup in one of the deepest groupings in the country, with Minnetonka holding off Edina by a 58-59 margin.

Wayzata took third with 68 points and St. Michael-Albertville finished fourth with 76 points.

Minnetonka had its fifth scorer, eighth-grader Abby Downin, secure 17th overall, one second ahead of Edina’s fifth scorer, junior Lauren Cossack in 18th place.

Edina and Minnetonka are scheduled to square off again Oct. 26 in the Section 2AAA meet at Gale Woods Farm, with the Minnesota State High School League final Nov. 6 at St. Olaf College.

Despite Weddington sweeping the top three spots Wednesday at the Southern Carolina Conference Championships, Cuthbertson followed with the next five finishers to create a dramatic outcome, but the Warriors were able to hold on for a 29-30 victory.

Emma Jones, Elizabeth Ritter and Grace Hanson led Weddington, which is scheduled to face Cuthbertson again Oct. 30 at the 4A Midwest Regional at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, before their ultimate showdown Nov. 6 at the state final at the same venue.

Anaheim Canyon returned to the California regional rankings following a 35-36 victory Oct. 16 over JSerra at the Orange County Championships at Oak Canyon Park.

Emma Hadley took second and fellow senior Isabella Frisone finished fourth for Anaheim Canyon, which captured its first team title at the county meet in program history following runner-up finishes in 2018 and 2019.

JSerra had four athletes in the top 10 and a 33-second spread among its five scorers, but was unable to maintain its 21-point advantage following the first mile.

Both teams are scheduled to compete at the 73rd Mt. SAC Invitational, but JSerra is entered in a Division 4 varsity race Friday and Anaheim Canyon is scheduled to participate Saturday in the Division 1-2 team sweepstakes field.

Despite its 62-66 loss Oct. 9 to Bethlehem Central High of New York in the Eastern States Championship race at the Manhattan Invitational, Ridgewood High from New Jersey still maintained the top spot in the Northeast after rebounding Oct. 15 by placing five athletes in the top 10 at the Big North Championships at Darlington Park, the same venue playing host Saturday to the Bergen County Championships.

Bethlehem Central and Fayetteville-Manlius have continued to improve in New York, but closing the gap on Saratoga Springs has remained a challenge, with the Blue Streaks taking the top five spots Oct. 16 at the Burnt Hills Invitational at Saratoga State Park.

Sophomore Emily Bush has enjoyed a breakthrough season for Saratoga Springs, earning another victory to help the Blue Streaks prevail by a 15-81 margin over Bethlehem Central.

Lewisville Flower Mound began its postseason march to a UIL 6A state title in Texas, sweeping the top five finishers in District 6 competition at North Lakes Park in Denton, led by Oklahoma State commit Natalie Cook. The Jaguars are scheduled to race their regional meet Monday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Summit had six competitors in the top 20 in the Orange Varsity race Oct. 16 at the Lewis and Clark Invitational to produce a 45-96 triumph against Lincoln in a showdown of two of the top programs in Oregon. The Storm will compete Oct. 27 in the Mountain Valley Conference Championships, before the anticipated matchup Nov. 6 in the 6A state final with Jesuit.

York High in Illinois had five athletes finish in the top 10 to capture the title Oct. 16 with a 34-83 victory over Oak Park at the West Suburban Conference-Silver championship meet.

York is scheduled to participate in 3A regional competition Saturday, followed by racing sectionals Oct. 30.
