Wave Of State Meets Recalibrates Top 30 As Postseason Nears

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

There are some new teams in the rankings this week that have broken out at their state championship meets. They did some good things during the regular season, but then put it all together for a trophy.

Brebeuf Jesuit came on late to do that in Indiana. Last weekend, North Allegheny did that in Pennsylvania. Rocky Mountain did it in Idaho. Deer Creek of Edmond did it in Oklahoma.

What these teams revealed, better than they have all year, is that their fifth man will not take a big number. There is a high quality runner leading the way and the fifth guy isn't far away.

Brebeuf Jesuit moved up 11 spots this week thanks to a championship run where low stick Krishna Thirunavukkarasu placed third and his four scoring teammates stayed within a minute of him. That was a recipe for success in Terre Haute and it could be going forward as well.

North Allegheny ran on difficult courses this across Pennsylvania that didn't produce a lot of fast times. But the team proved its mettle at Parkview Cross Country Course, Top runner Scott Nalepa rejoined the team for the first time since late September and the Tigers blew past La Salle College, the Manhattan Invitational champion. This team is on the cusp of the top 10.

Another mover was Rocky Mountain of Meridian, Idaho, which will race for an NXR Northwest championship on Saturday and moves to No. 15 this week. At the Idaho state meet, the Grizzlies put all five scorers through the tough Eagle Island Park course in under 16:20. Senior Trent Wigod and sophomore Landon Heemeyer led the way placing second and third in the Class 5A final.

Also in the Northwest, Jesuit of Portland moves up a spot to No. 3 after a sensational performance at the Oregon state meet, where all five scoring Crusaders ran under 15:50 at Lane Community College.

Deer Creek of Edmond, Okla. enjoyed a huge performance at the Oklahoma state championships with a high quality effort that puts the team in contention for the NXR South title against Texas powers Grapevine, Southlake Carroll and The Woodlands -- all of whom are now in the Top 30.
