Boys Regional Rankings - 11/18/2021

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The first batch of Nike Cross Regional meets shaped the final set of regional rankings for the 2021 cross country season in the Midwest and Heartland, where all of the important players arrived to take part. Sandburg (Orland Park) defeated Brebeuf Jesuit, the Indiana champion, and a handful of top Illinois teams to claim the Midwest on a raw, windy day in Terre Haute.

Wayzata MN, a preseason No. 1 in the Heartland, got the job done in the Heartland thanks to a tightly packed five to beat good teams from Nebraska and Iowa.

But in the Northwest, the regional was more compelling for the individual races than it was the team championships. The bulk of the best teams in the Northwest will instead go this Saturday in Arlington, Wash. at the Pacific Northwest Regional XC Showcase presented by Hole in the Wall & Stumptown Running. That meet, on the boys side, is a bit like an Oregon 6A replay, with US#3 Jesuit and US#10 Central Catholic going head-to-head for the second time in two weeks.

This weekend's NXR Southwest in Arizona features seven Top 30 teams on the boys side and figures to be the deepest race in the country so far this year. Colorado's US#2 Cheyenne Mountain, plus Niwot, Mountain Vista and Valor Christian will be on the same starting line with Utah's Farmington, American Fork and Riverton, and New Mexico's Los Alamos will a chance to show what it can do.

The New York region has been consistent, at least through the top four, most of the season and it was confirmed again with the NYSPHSAA championships last weekend. This weekend's Federation meet gives Fordham Prep an opportunity to compete with the state's best teams, and then NXR New York will put an even finer point on it.

The other regional this weekend is the NXR South, which has typically been a Texas-dominated affair. And that could be the case again, with Louisiana champion Jesuit not having enough time to fully prepare after its state meet on Tuesday. But Deerk Creek (Edmond) certainly offers a threat to the traditional Texas powers, Southlake Carroll and The Woodlands.

The Southeast region was shaken up somewhat by the recent state championship meets, where Hardin Valley Academy's performance in Tennessee, the competitive nature of Mount Tabor and Weddington in North Carolina, Severna Park's performance in Maryland and Belen Jesuit's in Florida, all begged for consideration. Another team that was right on the cusp of the top five this week was Huntsville AL, which won the Alabama Class 7A title.

The Northeast has a new No. 1 this week in the wake of Union Catholic's first ever New Jersey Non-Public A Group title. It was the first time that UC had ever finished ahead of CBA at the Groups meet at Holmdel and the team will get another chance to make history this weekend at the Meet of Champions. North Allegheny dominated the Pennsylvania state meet and slots in at No. 2. Vermont champion U-32 maintains its hold on No. 5 after becoming the first team from The Green Mountain State to win New Englands since 1987.

Is there a reason why you would put out the final CA regional rankings out before CA state was run on 11/27?
