The landscape of the Southeast Region has the potential to become much clearer this weekend with the Great American Cross Country Festival returning to WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C., and the Jesse Owens Classic at Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Alabama.

Cuthbertson High, the reigning NXR Southeast winner, is scheduled to compete Saturday in the Garmin Race of Champions at Great American, along with North Carolina rival Cardinal Gibbons, as well as Tatnall School in Delaware, Assumption High from Kentucky and Marietta High of Georgia.

Three of the top juniors in the country in Hannah Rae Shaffer from Cardinal Gibbons and Tennessee standouts Abby Faith Cheeseman from Webb School of Bell Buckle and Claire Stegall of Nolensville High are also scheduled to compete in the Garmin Race of Champions.

Tatnall School is looking to build off the momentum of having Ruby Schweim emerge victorious, along with placing five scorers in the top eight, on Sept. 30 at the Carlisle Invitational in Pennsylvania.

The Jesse Owens Classic gold race is expected to showcase Webb School of Knoxville, last year’s NXR Southeast runner-up, in addition to fellow Tennessee programs Brentwood and Harpeth Hall, as well as Auburn High of Alabama.

Freshman Sarah Tole of Auburn, Samantha McGarity from Harrison High in Georgia and Kate Robinson of Knoxville West in Tennessee are also entered in the girls gold race.

Webb School placed five scorers in the top 10, led by sophomore Jazzlyn Garmer taking third, to triumph by a 19-38 margin against Farragut Sept. 30 at the Knoxville Interscholastic League Championships.

All of the top five programs in California are expected to compete Saturday in the Bill Buettner girls championship race at the 44th ASICS Clovis Invitational.

JSerra, which finished second Sept. 16 in the Bob Day girls sweepstakes race at the 42nd Woodbridge Cross Country Classic at nearby Orange County Great Park in Irvine, will have to travel to the home course of Buchanan High at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Buchanan took third in the Bob Day girls sweepstakes race at Woodbridge, finishing 50 points behind JSerra in the 34-team field.

Los Altos, which joined Buchanan and JSerra in qualifying for Nike Cross Nationals last year, triumphed by a 93-122 margin at the ASICS Clovis Invitational against JSerra in last year’s Bill Buettner girls championship race at Woodward Park.

JSerra is expected to have its lineup bolstered by the additions of transfers Sophie Polay of Santa Margarita and Chloe Elbaz from Xavier Prep.

Ventura, which is anticipating the season debut of Newbury Park transfer Tiffany Sax, will look to improve on its ninth-place finish from the Bob Day girls sweepstakes race at Woodbridge, trailing JSerra, Buchanan and seventh-place Corona Santiago among California programs.

Downers Grove North from Illinois demonstrated its depth Wednesday by placing seven athletes in the top 20, led by Lily Eddington finishing third, to prevail by a 37-103 against host Naperville North at the Twilight Invitational.

Prospect also showcased the strength of Illinois in the Midwest Region by relying on Veronica Znajda, Lily Ginsberg and Meg Peterson all finishing in the top 15 in the USA Race of Champions to achieve a 91-133 victory Sept. 30 against Noblesville from Indiana at Nike XC Town Twilight at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute.

Union Catholic of New Jersey followed its impressive 32-45 victory Sept. 23 against Saratoga Springs from New York at the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island by having Paige Sheppard, Courtney Kaiser, Peyton Hollis and Cayleigh Kaiser sweep the top four spots as part of five scorers finishing in the top 10 in the girls varsity ‘E’ race at the New Balance Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park.

Union Catholic prevailed by an 18-56 margin against fellow New Jersey program Haddonfield Memorial.

With Lucas Lovejoy relying on a third-place finish from Sara Morefield to achieve a repeat in the “El Caliente” girls race at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Arkansas with a 124-209 victory Sept. 30 against Olathe West from Kansas, the Leopards continued to showcase their strength in the South Region.

Southlake Carroll edged Flower Mound in another chapter for the Texas 6A rivals with an 85-92 win in the girls elite race Sept. 30 at the Nike South Invitational at Bear Branch Park.

Samantha Humphries prevailed and Alexandra Fox took third for Flower Mound, which continues to race without her twin sister Nicole Humphries, who remains sidelined with injury.

One day following Niwot sweeping the top five spots, highlighted by a victory from Addison Ritzenhein, in the girls sweepstakes race Sept. 29 at the Desert Twilight Festival in Arizona, fellow Colorado program Mountain Vista produced its most impressive performance of the season by having Peyton Adams and Juliet Frum take the top two spots, contributing to six athletes placing in the top eight to secure a 19-82 victory against host Boulder at the Pat Patten Invitational at Viele Park.
