Tatnall School from Delaware tackles tough challenges at Great American Cross Country Festival and Carlisle Invitational, looks to complete impressive trifecta with victory in Eastern States race at Manhattan Invitational; Air Academy, Union Catholic, Webb School of Knoxville and Bethlehem Central also produce strong efforts By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor Tatnall School in Delaware achieved one of the most impressive streaks in Nike Team Nationals and Nike Cross Nationals history, making seven consecutive appearances in Oregon from 2006-12, finishing in the top six four times, including third-place efforts in both 2008 and 2011. But the Hornets haven’t had the same national presence during the past decade, not being able to build on their Southeast Region record for the most trips to Portland. Following impressive performances Sept. 30 at the Carlisle Invitational in Pennsylvania and Oct. 7 at the Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina, Tatnall demonstrated it has the depth to potentially end its NXN drought this season. Tatnall placed five scorers in the top 35, with Abby Downin, Katie Payne, Ruby Schwelm, Carlita Kaliher and Katrina Endres all separated by less than 30 seconds to prevail by a 68-96 margin against Cardinal Gibbons from North Carolina in the Garmin Race of Champions at WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. Assumption High from Kentucky edged reigning NXR Southeast champion Cuthbertson of North Carolina by one point to take third in the Garmin Race of Champions. The Hornets also had the same five athletes finish in the top eight with a 30-second spread to triumph with 27 points at the Carlisle Invitational at Travis Trail. Tatnall will look to continue its momentum Oct. 14 competing in the Eastern States Race at the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in New York. The Hornets last won the Eastern States title at Manhattan in 2012. Webb School from Knoxville, last year’s NXR Southeast runner-up, had five scorers finish in the top 25 to achieve a 55-80 victory against fellow Tennessee program in the gold race Oct. 7 at the Jesse Owens Classic at Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Alabama. Jazzlyn Garmer and Anna Graves secured fourth and fifth for the Spartans, who also had Calysta Garmer, Kristina Weaver and Lauren Davis place in top 25 to produce a spread of less than 50 seconds. Second-ranked Air Academy from Colorado produced its most impressive performance since winning Sept. 16 at the 42nd Woodbridge Cross Country Classic presented by ASICS America, sweeping the top four places Oct. 6 at the Kadet Invitational. Bethany Michalak won the 5-kilometer Division 1 race in 16:48.9, with Emily Beers, Chamorra Cooper and Mariah Hook completing the top four for Air Academy, which had Olivia Chura and Lauren Myers secure sixth and seventh, respectively, in addition to Sofia Kunstle grabbing 11th and Madeline Pool placing 13th in a 16-60 triumph against The Classical Academy. Union Catholic from New Jersey also produced a sweep of the top four spots Oct. 10 at the Union County Championships at Oak Ridge Park to win its section with a 16-59 victory against Westfield. Paige Sheppard prevailed in the 5-kilometer competition in 17:40.08, followed by Courtney Kaiser, Cayleigh Kaiser and Kayla Devine, with Emmy O’Hearn securing sixth, Ella Solorzano taking ninth, Caitlin Toy finishing 12th, Jimmiea King grabbing 18th and Aubrey Devers capturing 21st for the Vikings. Bethlehem Central of New York swept the top four spots and had seven athletes finish in the top 12 at the Saratoga Invitational at Pitney Meadows to secure a 17-57 win Oct. 7 against Niskayuna. Anna Chrapowitzky won the 5-kilometer race in 18:23.4 and was supported by Logan Kuhn, Katherine Bannigan, Charlotte O’Meara, Tess McNamara, Olivia Deer and Sidney Graham for the Eagles.
