Lone Peak showcases exceptional depth at Utah state final to capture fourth Class 6A title in five years, with top programs in Colorado, Kentucky, Minnesota, Oregon and Texas achieving impressive victories ahead of championship meets By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor Although the Utah High School Activities Association state championship meet showcased the nation’s top two boys cross country programs, the most dominant performance from Tuesday’s event at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City came in the Class 6A girls final by Lone Peak. The Knights placed five athletes in the top six, including back-to-back individual titles from senior Andie Aagard, to achieve the lowest score in Class 6A history with 19 points. The previous mark came from Lone Peak with 30 points in last year’s final. Lone Peak secured a fourth state title in five seasons, delivering one of the strongest performances in program history and one of the most impressive showcases of depth in the country this season, with Addie Meldrum taking third, Maya Bybee finishing fourth, Boston Bybee placing fifth and Anna Bybee securing sixth. The Knights ran two minutes faster than they did last season at the Regional Athletic Complex, achieving a 40-second spread among their five scorers. American Fork, which had five athletes in the top 15 led by runner-up Avalon Mecham to place second with 48 points, improved by more than a minute from last season. Timpview, led by back-to-back champion Jane Hedengren and third-place finisher Lily Alder, won its first state title since 1996 by capturing the 5A crown and Mountain View – highlighted by individual winner Julie Moore – added to its Utah all-time record with a 20th championship by prevailing in the 4A final. Colorado will have an opportunity to showcase several of the nation’s elite teams Oct. 28 at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs. Air Academy and Mountain Vista will square off in the Class 5A final, with Niwot seeking a sixth consecutive Class 4A championship, the longest title streak in the state in the past decade. All three teams produced convincing regional victories Oct. 19 to qualify for the state championship meet. Lucas Lovejoy of Texas also placed five athletes in the top six in Class 5A Region 2 competition Monday at Lynn Creek Park to prevail with 18 points, led by Sara Morefield winning in 17:46.57. The Leopards will pursue a third consecutive state title Nov. 3 at Old Settlers Park. Southlake Carroll had five scorers in the top 25 to triumph against Flower Mound by a 54-82 margin in the Class 6A Region 1 meet Tuesday at Mae Simmons Park. The Dragons have the potential to halt a three-year run by Flower Mound and capture their first 6A state title since 2019 in the Nov. 4 final at Old Settlers Park. Lincoln High of Oregon produced five athletes in the top seven Wednesday in the Class 6A Portland Interscholastic League District Championships at Lents Park, with freshman Ellery Lincoln securing victory in 17:43.2. Jesuit from Oregon prevailed Wednesday with five scorers in the top seven at the Class 6A Metro League Championships at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center, led by junior Emma Bennett winning in 17:41.75. The programs are scheduled to clash Nov. 4 in the Oregon 6A final at Lane Community College. Wayzata High of Minnesota had five competitors in the top nine Wednesday at Gale Woods Farm to earn a 29-50 victory against Edina at the Section 6AAA Championships. The Trojans are looking to repeat as Class AAA state champions Nov. 4 at Les Bolstad Golf Course. Assumption from Kentucky had six athletes in the top 10, led by senior Reagan Gilmore winning in 17:24.4, in its Class AAA Region 4 meet Oct. 21 at Seneca Park in its final preparation for the state championship race Oct. 28 at the Horse Park in Lexington. Union Catholic of New Jersey swept the top six spots Oct. 19 in the Union County Championships at Warinanco Park, with senior Peyton Hollis prevailing in 17:52.0. North Allegheny from Pennsylvania produced seven athletes in the top 30 to achieve a 52-118 victory Oct. 19 against Peters Township in the Class AAA race at the TSTCA Championships at White Oak Park.
