Boys Regional Rankings - 11/2/2023

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

State meets last weekend in Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Idaho, Oklahoma and West Virginia all pushed the needle on teams either entering the regional rankings, moving up, or holding onto their positions.

A wave of 22 more state meets will impact the rankings further.

In Iowa, Dowling Catholic of West Des Moines put together a strong performance to win the Iowa Class 4A title and defeat strong teams from Cedar Falls and Ankeny. With those three teams in the top five of the Heartland region, Iowa has a chance to send a team to Nike Cross Nationals for just the second time.

But, the Minnesota state meet is this weekend and those teams, such as No. 5 Wayzata, are set to peak just a bit later.

Stevens Point won the Wisconsin state meet with the best performance by any team in the Heartland region this year and are the favorites going into Sioux Falls.

In the Northwest, Maximus Cervi-Skinner led four runners from Couer d'Alene into the top 11 of the Class 5A Idaho state championships in Pocatello. The Vikings beat another top five Northwest team, Rocky Mountain, 45-60, for the state title.

It's close for the top spot in the Northwest. Crater still holds onto it. The Comets scored 17 points at their district meet last week and top runner Tayvon Kitchen ran 14:57.16 for the win. Crater's biggest test comes Saturday at the Oregon state meet at Lane Community College. It's also a big day for the two others teams in the Northwest rankings, as Franklin and Jesuit go head to head in the 6A final.

Another entertaining state meet is on tap this weekend at Detweiller Park in Peoria, where the Illinois state championships will include three ranked teams out of the Midwest. Downers Grove North has held the top spot throughout the season as it looks for a return trip to Portland.

At the competitive Class 3A Granite City sectional, Plainfield North scored 55 points and overcame a 1-2 finish by Plainfield South's Camyn Viger and Dylan Maloney. South scored 64 points and another strong team, O'Fallon, was third with 80.

In the Northeast, Brookline MA took over the top spot in the HOKA Postal Nationals on Halloween. Kailas Ciatto (9:24.61), Altamo Aschkenasy (9:28.96), Lysander Duffield (9:30.12), Pablo Tejedor-Meyers (9:34.37) and Ben Kasen (9:34.42) all seem primed for a strong run at state and beyond and move up a spot to No. 3 in the Northeast.

Deer Creek of Edmond put six in the top 16 of the Oklahoma Class 6A meet, including eighth grader Micah John (15th), and have moved up to No. 2 in the South. Again, with the Texas state meet this weekend and teams ready to peak in the Lone Star State, it could shuffle again before NXR South.

Niwot showed that it has the best team in Colorado, winning the Class 4A with 58 points. Rock Canyon answered the question about which team is second-best among a handful of contenders, and won the Class 5A title with 96 points. The Jaguars join the rankings for the first time at Southwest No. 5.

In the Northeast, Ridgefield CT actually lost to Danbury CT at the CIAC LL meet, 59-70. But Ridgefield seemed to be holding back, perhaps because of the heat that ended up canceling the final races of the day at Wickham Park. Ridgefield is still the favorite to win the CIAC Open on Monday.
