Another Historic Run By Newbury Park Adds Surge Of Momentum To 'Best Ever' Discussion

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Everybody continues to chase Newbury Park, whose Fab Four rolled through the Woodward Park course last weekend at the Clovis Invitational with another big-meet sweep.

The Sahlmans (Colin and Aaron) and Youngs (Leo and Lex) are rock stars at this point in the high school cross country season. Not only do they perform greatest hits, they are developing a fan base. But it's the depth at Nos. 5 and 6 that deserves some attention. Hector Martinez was 50 seconds behind his four teammates at the Woodbridge Classic and trimmed that down to 33 seconds at Clovis. And sixth man Daniel Appleford was two and a half seconds behind Martinez, in 15th place.

The results of other large meets around the country -- many of them back for the first time since 2019 -- have reshaped this week's Top 30. Winners at Manhattan (La Salle College PA), Great American (Mount Tabor NC) and Chile Pepper (Central Catholic OR) all made leaps forward this week by defeating highly ranked teams.

Colorado holds four of the top 12 spots on the list, with No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 3 Niwot leading the way. Cheyenne Mountain was impressive again at the Pat Patten Invitational on Oct. 2, putting five runners in the top seven. Kaden Levings, Erik Le Roux, Knox Exton, Enzo Knapp and Tyler Nord are a formidable group and perhaps one of the best ever in Colorado. The team will have a chance to prove it in two weeks at the Colorado state championships (Oct. 30).

Jesuit OR took care of business at the Hole In The Wall Invitational in Arlington, Wash. last weekend and won a highly anticipated match-up with Seattle's Bishop Blanchet. The Crusaders are stronger at No. 5 than Bishop Blanchet or Franklin OR, the two teams who were more comparable as they waged a close competition for second. The Oregon state meet is building intrigue as Jesuit faces potential challenges from Central Catholic, reigning 6A champion Franklin and Lincoln.

Utah is inching closer to its state meet on Oct. 27 and Farmington's depth appears to be rock solid as it prepares to defend its Class 5A title, although Mountain View is a threat. Meanwhile American Fork, Corner Canyon and Skyridge are looking forward to a battle royal in Class 6A.

Sandburg of Orland Park, Ill. showed what it is made of again at the Peoria Invitational and another Midwest team, Hilliard Davidson of Ohio made a big jump in the rankings thanks to an impressive showing at the McQuaid Invitational in New York. Columbus North IN remains the top team in Indiana, but its victory at the Nike XC Town Twilight Meet showed that Center Grove and Carmel are both close as well.
