Newbury Park Crushes Clovis Again To Prove Its Status As No. 1; Jesuit of New Orleans and CBA Win Huge Meets To Hold Top-Three Spots

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The 43rd ASICS Clovis Invitational revealed a bit more about the current lineup of the Newbury Park boys.

The graduation of Colin Sahlman has justifiably reduced the Big Four to the Big Three and the support behind them may be a bit further back.

But there is no mistaking Newbury Park as the best team in the country after the top five averaged 15:00 at Woodward Park last weekend and scored 40 points. Leo Young, Lex Young and Aaron Sahlman were all fantastic and Brayden Seymour and Dev Doshi are as good or better than any 4 or 5 in the country.

For the sake of reference, Newbury Park set course record average of 14:44 in 2021 that may last for eternity.

Jesuit of New Orleans achieved one of the biggest wins of the year when it switched its travel plans as Hurricane Ian was bearing down on the Southeast and went to the Nike XC Town Twilight at LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Indiana. Under the lights, or in patches of darkness, Jesuit put five scorers across the finish line with a 41-second compression. And sophomore Brady Mullen's sixth-place finish led the group.

Carmel, which placed second by nine points, actually broke the team average record with 15:21 (one second faster than Jesuit), thanks to a big effort by overall winner Kole Mathison (14:51.7). The Greyhounds rise up to No. 5 this week.

Christian Brothers Academy of New Jersey continued to show the depth and quality of its pack with a dominant victory at the Manhattan Invitational with 72 points to win the Eastern States Championship title. CBA's team average of 12:53.2 was almost 20 seconds faster than runner-up Corning-Painted Post NY. The Colts had a 28-second compression on five scorers, led by Nicholas Sullivan and Joe Barrett

Herriman of Utah has navigated the early part of the post-season, gliding through regional and divisional meets on the way to the UHSAA Championships on Oct. 25.

Plainfield (South) IL, led by Camyn Viger, moved up 10 spots thanks to its impressive third-place performance at the Nike XC Town Twilight meet and is one of a handful of teams to move up thanks to that electric opportunity. Seven teams in the top 30 were at Terre Haute for that meet, and all but Hinsdale Central IL got a bump upward as a result.

The loss of opportunity to run at Great American no doubt hurt the teams that were poised for a big performance there.

No. 8 Jesuit of Oregon won back-to-back invitationals in Washington state the past two weekends, the Twilight XC Invitational in Marysville and the Nike Hole In The Wall Invitational at Lakewood. The Crusaders have four returners from last year's third-place national team, led by senior Jacob Nenow

Southlake Carroll TX won the Chile Pepper 'El Caliente' race and, somewhat like CBA, have shown high quality depth and a tightly bunched pack.

Union Catholic NJ moved on from an impressive start at Bowdoin Park to capture the Shore Coaches Invitational and Union County Championships, and junior Sean Wilson is making a big impact since joining the team.

Florida's top team, Belen Jesuit, took a step forward with a dominant win last weekend at the Florida State Invitational/Pre-State in Tallahassee.
