Five weeks removed from potential national championship opportunities in Alabama or Oregon, the top three girls cross country teams in the nation demonstrated exactly why they are considered as such with their performances Oct. 29 at meets in California, Colorado and New York.

For the first time all season, Saratoga Springs High from New York was able to showcase its full lineup, and the Blue Streaks produced an effort that was reminiscent of its impressive 2019 run to the Nike Cross Nationals title by sweeping the top five spots against Bethlehem Central at the Suburban Council Championships at Saratoga State Park.

Senior McKinley Wheeler, who made her season debut Oct. 15 at the Burnt Hills Invitational, completed the perfect score of 15 points for Saratoga Springs by finishing fifth in 17 minutes, 49.91 seconds.

Emily Bush, a junior, prevailed in 17:12.88 on the 3.04-mile layout, followed by senior Sheridan Wheeler in 17:20.01, with juniors Alycia Hart (17:35.14) and Anya Belisle (17:44.23) taking third and fourth for the Blue Streaks.

Saratoga Springs is scheduled to compete Nov. 5 at the Section 2 Championships in Queensbury.

Buchanan High of California had five competitors produce sub-17 performances on the 3-mile course at the Kingsburg Gun Club at the John Seaman Invitational to also achieve a perfect score of 15 points.

Grace Hutchison, a senior, triumphed in 16:40.57 for the Bears, who raced with their top lineup for the first time since Sept. 16 at the 41st Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS at Great Park in Irvine, Calif.

Sophomore Elle Lomeli clocked 16:46.36, freshman Kynzlee Buckley ran 16:51.11, senior Sydney Sundgren finished fourth in 16:55.64 and sophomore Sierra Cornett was fifth in 16:57.51 for Buchanan, which returns to its home course at Woodward Park three times in a 17-day span to compete at the Tri-River Athletic Conference final, the Central Section Masters meet and the California Division 1 state championships.

Niwot High from Colorado was the only program in the top three competing for a state title, winning a fifth consecutive Class 4A championship by placing five scorers in the top six to equal its all-time record of 20 points.

Competing at 6,000 feet elevation, the Cougars were led by freshman Addison Ritzenhein finishing second on the 5-kilometer layout in 17:56.5.

Jessica Secor, a senior, covered the 5-kilometer layout in 18:07.6 for DuPont Manual to achieve the second-fastest performance in course history to place runner-up behind Madison Central senior Ciara O’Shea, who secured her fifth consecutive title in an all-time state championship mark of 17:07.6.
