Boys Regional Rankings, 10/8/15

By Paul Schmitz

South

El Paso Eastwood stepped up and traveled to Arizona for the Desert Twilight, with Daniel Bernal taking the sweepstakes boys race win, but the team spread 1-thru-5 of 1:42 was too big to handle the tough competition. Eastwood will need to tighten up to have a chance at NXN South. Southlake Carroll finished second to Lafayette HS at Chile Pepper in Arkansas and the Woodlands rolled to a 25-point team score at Nike South. We still give the edge to Southlake Carroll until the two teams meet head-to-head.

1. Southlake Carroll TX

2. The Woodlands TX

3. Jenks OK

4. El Paso Eastwood TX

5. The Woodland, College Park TX

Southeast

Due to the heavy rainfall and flooding in the Carolinas, many teams did not compete this past week. This region with the most parity also has the most volatility. Trinity Prep FL joins the regional rankings coming off of a Sept. 25 win at the FLRunners Invitational over New York's previous No. 2, St. Anthony's. Trinity Prep followed that with a victory at the FSU Pre-State Invite. Severna Park MD dropped Dulaney from the rankings after edging them by three points at the Bull Run Invitational and we are replacing them  -- although I predict Dulaney will work its way back in -- with Saint Xavier KY after its nice win at the Greater Louisville Classic.

1. Marietta GA

2. Broughton NC

3. Severna Park MD

4. Trinity Prep FL

5. Saint Xavier KY

Midwest

Sandburg IL continues to dominate the region and may be the best team in the country right now.  Not to be out done, Lafayette MO traveled to Chile Pepper Fayetteville, Ark. and took down an 82-team field with only 48 points. That field included US#8 Southlake Carroll TX. Our newcomer to the Midwest rankings is Lyons Township, which finished second to Sandburg's split squad at the Peoria Invitational. Lyons defeated Neuqua Valley in that meet.  Other teams to watch in the region are Solon OH, which won the Midwest Meet of Champions and we continue to watch Novi MI as its competition strengthens and it dominates in Michigan.

1. Sandburg IL

2. Lafayette MO

3. St. Ignatius OH

4. Carmel IN

5. Lyons Township IL

Heartland

Wayzata’s Jaret Carpenter won the race, but the Owen Hoeft led a Hopkins pack that finished 2-6 at the Willmar Invite for an impressive 20 points. US#15 Dowling Catholic IA debuts in our regional ranking after their win over the stacked field at the Roy Griak Invitational. In that same meet Edina edged Wayzata by four points to maintain their No. 3 spot. Stillwater MN is on the edge of this poll but No. 5 goes to the team to beat in Wisconsin, Madison La Follette.

1. Hopkins MN

2. Dowling Catholic IA

3. Edina MN

4. Wayzata MN

5. Madison La Follette WI

New York

St. Anthony’s bounced back to win its home invite this week after traveling to Florida and losing to Trinity Prep, a newcomer to our Southeast rankings. Liverpool who jumps from No. 5 to a tie at No. 1 after matching East Aurora at the McQuaid Invitational.  Liverpool, led by Ben Petrella, also knocked off instate rival Corning.  New to the ranking this week is Aidan Tooker-led Saratoga Springs.

1. East Aurora NY

(tie). Liverpool NY

3. Fayetteville-Manlius NY

4. Pittsford-Mendon NY

5. Saratoga Springs NY

Northeast

As mentioned in last week's national rankings, we are still waiting for CBA to run at full strength. It gets the top spot for now, but hopefully we'll get a clearer picture at the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday.   We have not given that same latitude to La Salle RI, which is dropping in this week's rankings. New to the list is Voorhees NJ, coming off of their 22-point performance at the Shore Coaches Invitational and an 18-point win over La Salle at Bowdoin Park in New York.

1. Christian Brothers Academy NJ

2. Lowell MA

3. Downingtown West PA

4. Voorhees NJ

5. La Salle Academy RI

Northwest

It was a tough couple of weeks for the Northwest. The regional teams were dominated by the teams from California and Utah at the Bob Firman Invite. North Central, Tahoma and Crater all finished outside of the top six in that meet. Summit moves into the top spot in the regional rankings after edging Mountain View ID by one point at the Nike Portland XC meet and a decisive victory at the Oxford Invitational in Bend, Ore. Bozeman MT finished the highest of this group at the Bob Firman Invite and enter the list at No. 4.

1. Summit OR

2. Mountain View ID

3. Crater OR

4. Bozeman MT

5. North Central WA

Southwest

We haven’t seen a full line-up from American Fork for a couple of weeks so we are going to bump them out of the top regional spot for now. (That full lineup may come as early as Friday). Timpanogos earned that spot with its win at the Bob Firman over an incredible multi-state field that included Great Oak CA, North Central WA, Tahoma WA, Laramine WY, Crater OR, Davis UT, Lehi UT, Lone Peak UT and Ogden UT. Davis was just five points from Timpanogos and three from Great Oak and keeps the No. 2 spot in regional ranking.

1. Timpanogos UT

2. Davis UT

3. American Fork UT

4. Desert Hills UT

5. Mountian Vista CO

California (by Erik Boal of DyeStatCal)

Jesuit's impressive win at the Stanford Invitational adds even more depth in an already loaded Division I. Dana Hills had a 19-second spread among its scoring five at the South Coast League Preview and West Ranch had six runners in the top 10 in its Foothill League opener. All of the top five teams will be in the championship race Saturday at the Clovis Invitational.

1. Great Oak (Southern Section Division I)

2. Dana Hills (Southern Section Division I)

3. Martin Luther King (Southern Section Division I)

4. West Ranch (Southern Section Division II)

5. Jesuit (Sac-Joaquin Section Division I)
