Naperville North IL Ready For Another Run At Title

By Adam Kopet of DyeStat

Girls NXR Midwest Preview

The Midwest region is perennially one of the deepest in the country. However, last year the region did not receive an at-large berth to NXN. In past years, it hasn't been uncommon to see four teams from the region earn trips to Portland.

This year could be another in which the Midwest stakes a significant presence at NXN. Naperville North IL leads the way after finishing second in the national championship by five points. The Huskies could make the podium again. The addition of transfer Campbell Petersen from Dunlap IL will only boost the team's chances.

Yorkville IL also returns a wealth of experience from last year's NXN, where they finished 18th. The Foxes did lose one runner from last year's team, but they appear ready to make a return trip to Portland.

Centerville OH and Wheaton Warrenville South IL are also early contenders in the Midwest. Centerville returns the varsity five that saw it finish fourth at last year's NXR Midwest. Wheaton Warrenville South return its top seven runners from last year and could figure prominently this season.

1. Naperville North IL. The Huskies graduated two of their top three runners from last year's NXN runner-up team, but they add Dunlap IL transfer Campbell Petersen. Naperville North is led by senior Alex Morris, who ran 10:33 for 3,200 meters in the spring.

2. Yorkville IL. The Foxes lost one runner from last year's NXN 18th-place team. This is a deep squad led by senior Emily Eberhart and sophomore Helena Kleronomos.

3. Centerville OH. The Elks return their top five runners from a team that finished fourth at last year's NXR Midwest. They are led by senior Grace Kilroy and sophomore Emma Bucher.

4. Wheaton Warrenville South IL. The Tigers return their entire varsity squad from last year after finishing eighth at NXR Midwest. They are led by sophomore Samantha Poglitsch, who finished 11th at the Illinois 3A State Championships last year.

5. Northville MI. The Mustangs, like all teams from Michigan, did not compete at NXR Midwest last year, likely due to the Michigan High School Athletic Association's stance on postseason meets. Should they find a way to participate this year, they could be in the running for a second trip to NXN.
