Boys Regional Rankings - 9/22/2022

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Last weekend's Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala. provided a big reveal for the quality of pack at Jesuit of New Orleans, which split 26 seconds on five scorers on the fast John Hunt Running Park course.

The combination of Brady Mullen, Jack DesRoches, Leland Crawford, Robert Buisson and Patrick Dowd all ran under 15:35 on the 5,000-meter layout and won the Showcase with 70 points. Jesuit is for real and ran beyond it's No. 11 national ranking.

Moving ahead of Southlake Carroll TX in the South is no small feat, but Jesuit appears to be slightly better.

A strong showing by Farragut of Tennessee pushed the Admirals ahead of Belen Jesuit FL and into the top spot in the Southeast. Those two teams went 2-3 and were separated by a mere four points as both finished behind Jesuit LA.

On another fast layout last week, the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic at Great Park in Irvine, Calif., Herriman of Utah and Crater of Oregon demonstrated high quality depth that boosted both schools into the top spots in their respective regions.

Herriman won the Doug Speck Sweepstakes race with a strong close in the final mile and Noah Jenkins and William Horne led the way. Herriman now leads the loaded the Southwest regional rankings, where a handful of national-caliber teams are left out of the top five.

Crater of Central Point, Ore., led by the one-two punch of Tyrone Gorze and Josiah Tostenson, had strong support at 3-4-5 and finished second at Woodbridge. The Comets move ahead of Jesuit of Portland this week and hold the top spot in the Northwest.

A big test this weekend at the Bowdoin Park XC Classic in New York will bring into focus the strength of teams like Union Catholic and Christian Brothers of New Jersey and Corning-Painted Post of New York. At least two of those teams will have to go head to head.
