High School Regional Rankings Boys XC 2021 - 11/4Published by
Boys Regional Rankings - 11/4/2021 By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor A number of teams pushed up into the regional rankings this week based on excellent team performances at state championship meets, and in some cases displaced teams that are on the cusp of that all-in effort either this weekend or in the weeks that follow. The state championships generally bring out the best in teams. They are the meets that hold the most significance for the vast majority of high schools and they are proving day for months' worth of training. Most of the regions this week have at least one big mover who made a statement at a state meet: In the South, it's Deer Creek of Edmond, Okla., which dominated the Oklahoma Class 6A competition with 44 points. The Texas powers -- Grapevine, Southlake Carroll, The Woodlands and El Paso Eastwood -- have their big opportunity to shine this weekend. Grapevine, which is a 5A school, has shown some vulnerability at No. 5 recently and their status on the top of this week's list feels shaky. In the Southeast, Conner of Kentucky enjoyed a banner day at the state meet and put up 40 points in the 3A final. It was a solid performance that puts Conner into the mix, but the state meets in Maryland (Severna Park), North Carolina (Mount Tabor) and Belen Jesuit (Florida) are yet to come. Severna Park bumps ahead of Mount Tabor this week to No. 1 in the region based on an impressive AACPS County Championship meet where the Falcons put eight in the top 10. The Midwest rankings have been reshaped by the Indiana state meet, which happened last Saturday, while Illinois, Ohio and Michigan were all still a step away and all three are set to go this Saturday. Brebeuf Jesuit's dominance in Indiana was enough to take over the top spot in the Midwest and second-place team Hamilton Southeastern comes in at No. 4. The Heartland's top spot is now occupied by Dowling Catholic, which stepped up and beat favored Sioux City North with a strong performance. All of the Heartland region's state meets have taken place except for Minnesota, and Wayzata seems to be trending toward a big finish and Minnetonka is not far behind. Idaho state champion Rocky Mountain showed that it deserved a regional ranking and replaces, for now, Bishop Blanchet of Seattle, which is rock solid through four but the gap back to No. 5 could be exposed this weekend at the Washington state meet. Oregon goes on Saturday as well and has four top-30 teams in the mix for the 6A title in Eugene. The Southwest region has seen the best athletes in Utah and Colorado put 10 toes into their respective state meets. Cheyenne Mountain has emerged as the best team in the deepest region. Niwot isn't far off. Farmington and American Fork of Utah are both formidable and Mountain Vista of Colorado rounds out an incredible top-five. SOUTH SOUTHEAST NORTHEAST 3.
