The Phillips Andover Girls finished a decent 4th at the 2008 NXN-Northeast regional, and this team MIGHT be significantly better (remains to be seen).

Their NEPSTA Division 1 Championship race in 2008 was helpful in "guessing" their potential ability.

The 2014 NEPSTA Division 1 Championship in scheduled for Nov 9th in Hotchkiss CT, so I will be watching closely (results usually show up on Coolrunning).

The Phillips Andover Girls have been pack running all season (the top 5), so it is hard to know individual differences at this point ... Their one race at Franklin Park, MA (Codfish Bowl - 9/27/2014) with times varying from 19:25 to 19:41 was actually quite good (... IF Franklin Park was running similar to races I have rated in past years, my ratings might be in the range of 110-120, and this looks like a group run).

A recent news article about the team:
http://www.eagletrib...92787d724f.html

Apparently, Anoush Shehadeh is coming off a groin injury ... she is the only senior of the top five (2 freshmen, 2 juniors)

Junior Peyton McGovern won the 1500 meter race at the New Balance Twilight No. 3 (May 31, 2014) in a decent 4:42.52, so I'm guessing she's capable of popping a very good XC performance ... and if Anoush Shehadeh is health, she could obvious be very good based on her Footlocker finish last year ... One of the freshmen (Grace Rademacher) ran an 18:57 5K last year as an 8th-grader.

This team might be very good, but right now it's uncertain where they stack-up to La Salle, Coe-Brown, Red Bank Catholic and other good Northeast teams.

All good points.

Just to add clarification on a few things. Rademacher is a repeat freshman (freshman last year at Wellesley HS according to milesplit... repeating to go to a school like PA is not uncommon), and has run twice in the 18:30s this fall according to their posted dual results. And the times at their most recent meet (a dual against Exeter) were as below. I think that course is a full 5K but a less difficult one, though it was really nasty weather that day (raining, 35, and windy (like NYC marathon the next day)).

1 McGovern, Peyton 18:30
2 Jones, Michaela 18:35
3 Rademacher, Grace 18:40
4 Exeter runner
5 Shehadeh, Anoush 18:48
6 Bango, Carmen 18:49

It is certainly true that it is hard to know where they will stack up against tougher competition. Or even if they plan on doing NXN, though I hope they will. I heard the Hotchkiss course was slow, but never seen that one myself so I don't know.

Agreed on all points. I doubt many coaches would do a thing to improve their positions in the rankings but you have to wonder if the lack of tough competition could/would hurt them when a team finally faces a hard race.

Doug, we had an independent schools race at GAXC for a few years (Edward Cheserek ran in it and provided a memorable solo performance if you recall). We did away with the meet when the NCHSAA began to allow members of the independent schools association to compete with their own members teams. The interest in the independent schools race waned when that happened and in fact it was never really popular to begin with.

Yeah, I don't think coaches should go to such extremes just for the sake of making it easier to rank them. I was just explaining why they haven't been included in the rankings yet, and an example solution if someone from the program really cared about not being included yet (re: find a way to race high schools outside their own association).

Travelling so far (by air presumably?) for a xc meet mid-term seems like a pretty extreme step to take for any school, though I suppose there must be some that would do it. Probably not one of these primarily academics-focused schools, though. Maybe Andover will simply make a go at being a dark horse at NXN.

They race other high school teams every week, just ones in a different athletic association. (And isn't this whole site about comparing teams in different athletic associations (?)). And because they aren't in the MIAA I don't think NEPSAC teams are even permitted to run in things like the twilight meet. (And if they are they probably don't know it.)

The difference is those other high school associations race against eachother at some point.

NEPSTA teams only racing NEPSTA teams is like Alaska or Hawaii teams only racing against Alaska or Hawaii teams - you never see how good they are against anyone else, only how good they are against eachother. It provides no frame of reference for comparison against everyone else, which means any comparison is going to be questionable and biased.

I wouldn't be surprised if NEPSTA teams couldn't race at the MSTCA Twilight - I just said it's too bad they didn't, as that would have provided a great point of reference to local teams that CAN be compared via direct competition to the rest of the region and nation. NEPSTA's best bet would probably be Great American - I know they had an All-Private schools division at the meet at least one year?

It's really hard for me to gauge a team that doesn't ever race high school teams (e.g. it would have been real nice if Phillips Andover and other NEPSTA ran at the MTSCA Twilight a couple weeks ago)... times alone don't really give a good perspective.

Do you know whether they have a more challenging race coming up soon?

Saw Phillips Andover team run at Choate yesterday. All 5 girls ran together from start to finish, clearly tempoing, not racing. Group finished in 19:27.6 scoring 15. Next runner 1 minute back. Hilly course.

Thanks for this insight.

I'm curious to know anything about what Shehadeh is up to. Is she not in great shape right now, or just jogging?
