Cuthbertson responds following cancellation of Great American Cross Country Festival with strong effort at Union County Championships in North Carolina, Jesuit triumphs again at Nike Hole in the Wall and Los Altos secures another impressive victory in California at ASICS Clovis Invitational

The cancellation of the Great American Cross Country Festival Presented by Garmin as a result of Hurricane Ian might have denied Cuthbertson High a potential opportunity to square off Oct. 1 against Saratoga Springs High from New York, but the absence of the event did nothing to derail the Cavaliers’ momentum with the North Carolina postseason schedule approaching later this month.

Cuthbertson produced another exceptional performance on home soil Oct. 6 at the Union County Championships at McAlpine Greenway Park, sweeping the first three spots and placing six athletes in the top 10 to produce an 18-54 victory against Marvin Ridge.

Stella Kermes, a junior, covered the 5-kilometer course in 17:22.50, followed by sisters Alyssa Preisano (17:40.09) and Justine Preisano (17:46.86) for Cuthbertson, which also showcased the return of senior Lillian Nasta and her fifth-place performance in 18:20.68.

Charlotte Bell was seventh in 18:24.79 and freshman Josie Schihl secured ninth in 19:00.63 for Cuthbertson, which is scheduled to compete Oct. 18 at the Southern Carolina Conference Championships at Weddington High.

Jesuit High from Oregon cruised to a 97-144 triumph against Torrey Pines High of California on Oct. 8 at the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational in Washington, with sophomore Maura O’Scannlain securing sixth in 18:13.7 for the Crusaders, who also had junior Liliana Hudnut place 16th overall in 18:37.2.

Jesuit is looking forward to being tested Oct. 14 at the Rose City Championship Invitational at the Rose City Golf Course, with anticipated matchups against Oregon rivals Summit, South Eugene, Lincoln and Franklin.

Los Altos took advantage of untimely illness experienced by several Buchanan High athletes to prevail Oct. 8 in the championship race at the 43rd ASICS Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif.

Lauren Soobrian placed 10th on the 5-kilometer layout in 17:47.8, with sister Emily Soobrian finishing 17th in 17:59.2 for Los Altos, which triumphed against JSerra by a 93-122 margin, with Newbury Park taking third at 123 points.

With the majority of the attention in New York on the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park, Fayetteville-Manlius quietly produced its best performance of the season to win Oct. 7 at the Chittenango Twilight Invitational.

Izzie Sullivan led a sweep of the top four spots for Fayetteville-Manlius by clocking 17:50.6 on the 5-kilometer course, serving as the catalyst for a 17-44 victory.

Hannah Kaercher was second in 18:48.2, Maria Khalifeh took third in 19:22.8 and Camille Ryan finished fourth in 19:28.0 for the Hornets.

Assumption High from Kentucky shined in the Eastern States Championship Race at Manhattan, earning a 116-130 victory against Bethlehem Central of New York.

Reagan Gilmore (15:06.2) and Julia Schmitt (15:20.5), both juniors, were ninth and 17th, respectively on the 2.5-mile layout at Van Cortlandt Park for Assumption, which became the first team from Kentucky to win the Eastern States title and the first program from outside New York to prevail since Claremont High from California secured the girls crown in 2018.

Rylee Davis was seventh in 14:59.4 and Charlotte O’Meara took 11th in 15:09.9 for Bethlehem Central.

Arapahoe of Colorado welcomed back senior Ava Escorcia to its lineup Oct. 7 at the Pat Amato Classic, with an 11th-place finish in her season debut contributing to a 43-93 victory for the Warriors against Los Alamos High from New Mexico.

American Fork edged rival Lone Peak by a 30-35 margin Oct. 11 in the Utah 6A Divisional competition at Lakeside Park, setting the stage for an outstanding clash Oct. 25 at the state championship at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City.

Both teams had all five scorers in the top 12, with American Fork’s Avalon Mecham holding off Lone Peak’s Andie Aagard by an 18:10.5 to 18:16.4 margin in a matchup of two of the top juniors in the state.
