F-M vaults to No. 1 with Eastern States win
By Adam Kopet for DyeStat
There is a new team at the top. The Hornets of Fayettevile-Manlius NY have overtaken the Wolfpack of Great Oak CA with their dominating performance in the East States Championship at the Manhattan Invitational to become the No. 1 team in the country. F-M's win has been compared to its 2009 victory in a season that saw them go on to dominate Nike Cross Nationals. However, Great Oak, led by senior Destiny Collins, has the deepest squad in America and stands in the way of another F-M coronatoin. The margin between these two teams may be two points. Essentially, it's nearly 50-50 at this point.
The big movers this week are Shenendehowa NY at No. 15, after winning the McQuaid Invitational, Marcus TX at No. 17, after their win over Kingwood TX at the McNeil Invitational, and both North Rockland NY and La Salle Academy RI at Nos. 21 and 22 respectively, after their performances at the Manhattan Invitational. All four teams were unranked two weeks ago.
The regular season action is still going strong in some states, while others are approaching championship meets. The Midwest and New York regions both have five teams in the Top 30 The Southwest and California regions both have four.
